Frank Shouldice’s The Mean Streets of Garradrimna is an immensely clever adaptation of Brinsley MacNamara’s The Valley of The Squinting Windows, the book that electrified Delvin, Co. Westmeath in 1918 with its savage portrait of small-town malevolence and gossip. Shouldice manipulates the story in such a way as to humanize the characters without detracting from their essential qualities. The play is also very funny, and extremely well-paced. A perfect and intelligent centenary transformation of an important Irish novel.
